The Nigeria Police in Adamawa State has arrested 238 people over the #EndSARS looting and resulting 24-hour curfew in the state.
The state Police Command has also retrieved 35 tractors, 12 tricycles, nine other vehicles, 742 bags of fertilizer, 18 bags of maize, 95 plastic chairs, and some other items which include eight pairs of Nigeria Customs Service uniform, all carted away while the looting spree lasted.
The looting occurred mostly in the state capita,l Yola between Sunday morning and Monday afternoon, with Governor Ahmadu Fintiri declaring a 24- hour curfew effective from Sunday afternoon to date.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adeyanju, who paraded the suspects before newsmen Wednesday morning, said 184 of the 238 suspects were apprehended for breaking into and looting government, private and corporate warehouses while 54 were arrested for violating the 24-hour curfew imposed by the government.
Among those arrested over looting was a family comprising a man and five children.
While the police charged them separately for using the family bus for looting, the father told newsmen during the parade at the police headquarters in Yola that he was hired to carry the goods with which he was arrested, insisting that his children were arrested when they turned up while he was being interrogated by police operatives.
The police commissioner who said the #EndSARS looting was unfortunate because Adamawa as a state never had any case of SARS, added that, in any case, #EndSARS protesters looking for palliatives had no reason going to places like FRSC, UNICEF, private busineses, and such places which have nothing to do with palliative items.
He said the efforts of police and sister security agents who had been on patrol across the state had succeeded in restoring order, but that the prevailing curfew would remain until the state governor decides otherwise.
