Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, ending a 23-year career with Portugal’s national team.
The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, in an emotional video message, declaring his intention to hand over the national team’s iconic No. 7 shirt.
“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the No. 7 shirt of our national team. It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart,” he said.
Ronaldo bows out with 234 international appearances and 146 goals, retaining the records for the most caps and goals in men’s international football.
Since making his senior debut in August 2003, he has led Portugal to three major international trophies: the 2016 European Championship and the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
His announcement follows reported tensions with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, including his omission from the starting line-up during the September international window and a subsequent disciplinary sanction by the Portuguese Football Federation.
The federation has pledged to organise a special tribute in recognition of his contributions to Portuguese football.
However, Ronaldo’s decision concerns only international football. He is expected to continue his professional career with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr as he pursues the milestone of 1,000 career goals.
His departure marks the close of an extraordinary chapter in international football, leaving behind records that have shaped the history of the Portuguese national team.
