Algeria’s President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has tested positive for COVID-19, his office announced on Tuesday.
The confirmation ends speculation about Tebboune’s health, after he was hospitalized in Germany, following cases of coronavirus among his staff.
The statement said the 74-year-old “continues to receive treatment in a specialised German hospital after catching the COVID-19 illness.
“The medical team is reassured that the president is responding to treatment and gradually recovering.”
Tebboune was transferred from a hospital in Algiers to Germany last week, days after going into self-isolation.
Algeria has witnessed a resurgence in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks.
On Tuesday alone, the North African recorded 405 new cases along with nine deaths.
