Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has said he will not lock down the state again for reason of COVID-19.
The governor made the declaration Thursday as he arrived in the state capital, Yola, from his vacation abroad.
Against recent upsurge of coronavirus infections around the state, the governor told newsmen at the International Airport, Yola, that there was no cause for alarm as other measures were in place to prevent widespread infections.
This is despite a significant increase in the number of infections from the coronavirus disease in the state recently.
Adamawa State last week recorded 47 new cases of coronavirus, the highest recorded in the state since the first infection in April last year, but the last new infections, recorded on January 10, numbered 26, leaving the state with a total of 494 infections, 233 on admission, 238 discharged and 26 infected people dead.
“There will be no lockdown as far as I’m concerned, but the COVID-19 committee and the state government are doing their best to see that we further enlighten our people to brace up and to ensure that we keep up with the COVID-19 protocols so that we remain safe. This is my wish, but I won’t lock down the state for whatsoever reason,” Fintiri said.
He spoke against the fact that he had locked down the state on two occasions over COVID-19 between when it was first recorded and before the beginning of the second wave of the pandemic.
His insistence that there would be no lockdown again may have come as assurance to Adamawa people who had last week been told by the government that fresh measures might be taken to prevent Coronavirus infections following poor responses to calls for adherence to safety protocols.
