The Adamawa Election Petitions Tribunal has commenced sitting in Yola with a promise of expeditious justice delivery to all 19 petitioners before it.
The chairman of the three-member tribunal, Justice Suleiman Akanmbi, made the promise on Monday during the inaugural sitting of the tribunal at the High Court complex in Jimeta, reiterating that the tribunal would pursue speedy deliberations.
He appealed to all lawyers to avoid such technicalities that could delay the process.
He said, “We solicit the cooperation of the members of the bar, the media and the general public to join in ensuring fair and expeditious trial and conclusion of the great task ahead.”
The Secretary of the tribunal, Godwin Agbo Ezenwa, disclosed that so far, the tribunal had received 19 petitions, which were from two senatorial, seven House of Representatives, and 10 House of Assembly contenders.
The two petitions challenging the outcome of the senatorial election were filed from Adamawa North and Adamawa South senatorial zones respectively.
Senator Binta Garba, who has represented Adamawa North in the Senate since 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is challenging the election of Ishaku Cliff of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while the petitioner from Adamawa South Senatorial Zone, Mo’allayidi Ahmed, also an incumbent senator and also of the APC, is questioning the election of Binos Dauda of the PDP.
