Community Gist, a leading online community newspaper and organizer of the just concluded annual Community Inter-Schools Spelling Bee competition which took place over the weekend at the Community Hall, Matogbun, Ogun state has retrieve the certificate of honour and prizes presented to winner of the primary category (name withheld) because the school presented JSS 1 pupils to represent them at the competition which is against the rules.
According to the convener of the event, Comrade Azeez Ramon, the step is necessary in order to curtain the school from the habit and it will also serve as deterrent to other schools that might be planning to engage in such act in subsequent events.
“Recall that I stated categorically in my welcome address that one of the missions of this programme is to discourage examination malpractice in our educational system and is highly disappointed with this development. But we will be doing thorough check in our subsequent editions,” Azeez asserted.
Alhaji Lukman Garu, CEO of Garu Technologies Nigeria Ltd and the major sponsor of the event, who reveal the culprit to the organizer of the event, totally condemned the act and admonished the organizer to always do thorough background check of participating schools and pupils, if they want him to continue to sponsor the event, adding that he will never engage in or encourage cheating.
‘I hate cheating and people who know me very know that I frown at it and I don’t associate myself with it. It’s very unfortunate if our kids are taught to lie at this early stages then we are in serious trouble in this country. I want to call on teachers to please help the family in training our children that are the leaders of tomorrow to be good ambassadors right from their tender age’.
