The Yobe State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has attributed the protest staged in the early hours of Wednesday in Damaturu, the state capital by some tricycle operators as an act of vandalism and criminal intimidation.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Abdulmalik Abdulhafeez, in a statement made a available to DAILY POST said, “following the persistent flouting of curfew placed on tricycles and the use of unregistered tricycles to commit crimes especially abduction, theft and other sundry crimes. The command decided to clampdown on unregistered tricycles to nip in the situation in the bud.”
The PPRO added that some miscreants who claimed to be members of tricycle association took law into their hands by attacking policemen who were performing their lawful duties.
“They also damaged traffic lights at the central roundabout and prevented innocent people from accessing the roundabout.
“This is purely a criminal act and has nothing to do with the protest”, ASP Abdulhafeez noted.
The Command through the spokesman assured all law abiding citizens of their safety, while appeal to parents and guardians to warn their children and wards to desist from taking law into their hands as anyone caught will be charged to court.
