Governor Willie Obiano, on Thursday morning, visited the scene of Wednesday’s fire disaster in Onitsha, promising to compensate the victims before Christmas.
The governor who was at the scene with members of his executive expressed sadness over the incident, assuring that government would not leave them alone in this moment of grief.
Also, in a swift reaction towards the inability of the State Fire Service to respond adequately to the Upper Iweka and Ochanja Market inferno, the Governor has summoned the state fire service chief, Mr Martin Agbili.
The governor also visited the station of the fire service to inspect some of their equipment, saying that his administration would work harder to equip the organization.
The fire chief, Agbili Martin while reacting to enquiries from the governor explained that, “our Firemen were refused access to the Fire scene.
“The efforts made by our sister State, Delta and other individuals like GUO Motors and their Firemen, were not successful as a result of the angry traders, who denied them access to the scene,” he said.
DAILY POST gathered that the governor has also summoned the relevant agencies to an emergency meeting to explain their efforts during the incident.
