Barrister Olusegun Bamgbose, the National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, CAGG, has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan, to quit partisan politics without further delay.
According to the senior lawyer, “Since 1999 when Nigeria returned to Democracy, Bayelsa State has been the stronghold of PDP but very unfortunately, they crashed out in the recent Governorship election in the State,” all because of the former President and his kinsmen who threw their weights behind the All Progressives Congress, APC and its candidate, David Lyon.
In a statement issued to DAILY POST on Sunday, Bamgbose noted that, “This is certainly the biggest political loss suffered by People Democratic Party in 20 years of democracy in Nigeria. It’s not only disgraceful but very humiliating.
“It’s speculated that the major reason amongst others for the fatal defeat was the tactical support of Goodluck Jonathan for the APC candidate, Duoye Diri.
“This is no doubt a great backstabbing on the side of Jonathan. It’s really a great betrayal of high order.
“The action of the formal President, to say the least, is highly condemnable, immoral and politically unethical.
“He should have reflected on the fact that it was on the platform of the party he became the Executive President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“It’s obvious that PDP is experiencing serious internal crises, but not withstanding, he committed a political blunder by permitting his stronghold to be taken over by the the enemies.
“What really influenced him to do such is unfathomable by me. It’s a political scander.
“His action has really worsened the political fortune of PDP in subsequent elections in Nigeria both in South South and the nation as a whole. Jonathan, no doubt he has committed a political sacrilege.
“I won’t however subscribe to him being sanctioned because that won’t help in solving the ugly situation. PDP is like a sinking ship.
“My humble and candid advice is for the party, well meaning Nigerians and political stakeholders to prevail on our beloved former President to quit partisan politics to save his political image.
“One won’t expect him to blow hot and cold by in the future supporting PDP candidate against APC.
“Jonathan has to quit partisan politics as soon as possible. His political future will be in jeopardy if he refused to do this.
“APC will certainly mess him up should remain in active politics. It’s high time for Jonathan to quit politics.”
