The United States (US) has become the first country in the world to record more than 2,000 Coronavirus (COVID-19) deaths in a single day.
According to the BBC, figures from Johns Hopkins University showed 2,108 people died in the past 24 hours in the US, which is ahead of the United Kingdom’s (UK) record of 980.
DAILY POST had reported that the UK recorded the highest daily Coronavirus death toll (980) in the world to surpass their previous record of 938.
The total number of people that have died of COVID-19 so far in the US is now 18,693, with 500,399 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
About half of the deaths were recorded in New York.
The US could soon surpass Italy as the country with the most COVID-19 deaths worldwide.
Reacting to the development, President Donald Trump said he expects the US to see a lower death toll than the initial predictions of 100,000 fatalities, adding: “we’re seeing clear signs that our aggressive strategy is saving countless lives.”
