The incident which left one of the children with a broken arm and others with various degrees of injuries had earlier generated concerns on social media as a Twitter user had claimed that the driver rammed into the motorcycle while being chased by the police officers.
A Twitter user @ThatLegacy_MFR wrote, “Police Officers were chasing a guy driving Benz GLX 350 this morning at Olororo Aiyegbami, Sagamu which later led to the loss of a mother and her two children on a bike.”
Speaking with PUNCH Metro on Sunday, the state Police Command Public Relations Officer, Oyeyemi Abimbola, while confirming the incident, described the accusation as “mischievous”.
She explained that the driver who had since absconded and abandoned his vehicle following the incident, was running away after hitting a police van that was parked nearby.
Fearing that he might be arrested, Abimbola said the driver drove recklessly through a one-way and rammed into a motorcycle carrying a woman and her children.
Abimbola said, “The guy who accused the police is mischievous. They will just sit down and write unfounded stories. The guy who drove the car took a one-way and hit the police vehicle that was parked. He thought the police were going to chase him. He started driving recklessly and rammed into a motorcycle conveying a mother and her two children.
“No life was lost in the incident. They are all alive. They are responding to treatment. It was the police that took them to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital. The child the woman was carrying sustained a broken arm. The motorcyclist sustained a mild injury.”
