4 Sporting Lagos in the final on Sunday (today) in Lagos, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Despite sailing through the group stage on goal difference, the Ikenne side booked their spot in the final with a 2-1 win over Lobi Stars while Sporting Lagos also came from a goal down to beat Akwa United 2-1 in the second semi-final on Friday.
Both clubs will meet for the second time in the tournament today at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. Their first southwest derby in the group stage ended 2-1 in favour of Sporting Lagos.
With their defeat in the group stage still fresh, Ogunmodede noted that his team has ticked the boxes of their targets at the competition, adding that a win will be an icing on the cake.
“Football is dynamic. Two games are not the same. One of our aims in this tournament is to bring all our new players to test as we prepare for the CAF Champions League and I think we have done that.
“We are delighted to be in the first ever final of the Naija Super 8 after an intense semi-final victory and credits to all the players, coaching crew and back-room staff for giving their 100 per cent commitment to experience this special moment,” Ogunmodede said.
Sporting Lagos have enjoyed a heavy presence of their fans more than any other team during the tournament and Ogunmodede noted that the second meeting will be won on the pitch and not in the stands.
“Sporting presently does not have one over 10 of what a team like Gombe United have when they play at home at the Pantami Stadium. My problem Is about tactics not the fans, for me the fans are here to enjoy it and we are also here to give them something that will make them happy.”
The final will kick off by 5pm and will feature special performances from Nigerian hip hop stars, Portable and Pheelz.
