The President and Chairman of the Council of Institute of Directors Nigeria, Alhaji Tijjani Borodo, has said Sustainability reporting plays a vital role in building a sustainable business.
Borodo said it helps organisations identify and manage ESG risks, enhances transparency and accountability, and aligns stakeholders with the company’s sustainability goals.
He disclosed this at the maiden annual conference of the Young Directors Forum of the Institute of Directors Nigeria themed, “Building A Sustainable Business – The Place of Sustainability Reporting” held today in Lagos.
In his welcome address, Borodo, said, “The Young Directors Forum of the Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria represents a community of vibrant network of emerging leaders who aspire to be leaders that will shape the corporate world landscape and contribute meaningfully to society by mentoring others and supporting CIoD Nigeria’s growth.”
He mentioned that these individuals, serving as executive or non-executive directors in both small and large enterprises across diverse sectors of the Nigerian economy, are passionate about enhancing their knowledge and skills in corporate governance.
According to him, they also seek to leverage CIoD Nigeria’s platform for mentorship opportunities and to build robust peer networks that will empower them in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities as directors.
Borodo stated that the theme of this Maiden Conference was very apt, considering the ongoing global response to building sustainable businesses.
However, he emphasised that sustainability reporting has become crucial to tracking and communicating the environmental, social, and governance performance of organisations.
He noted that sustainability reporting involves assessing and disclosing an organisation’s social and environmental impact, as well as its efforts to minimise negative effects and foster positive change.
