Edu reiterated this commitment on Saturday while presenting relief materials mainly rice and groundnut oil to victims of the flooding incident in Isheri, Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
The minister said that the relief materials are to lessen the hardship brought about by the flood incident, which is said to have affected no less than 33,000 people.
She said, “We are here to assess the extent of the damage caused by the recent flooding in Isheri and to also present these food items as a form of humanitarian assistance. It is in line with the agenda for renewed hope by President Bola Tinubu.
“The President is deeply touched by this flooding challenge and he has promised to bring a permanent solution to this reoccurring problem. We are well aware that beyond these palliatives, what you desire is a permanent solution to this perennial flooding problem.
“I want to assure you that talks are ongoing about the construction of buffer Dams to tackle this challenge and when next I am here it will be to join other government officials to commission some of these projects that will help to permanently end this problem”.
Edu also disclosed that the Federal Government is also interested in supporting those who lost their businesses to the flood saying that the present administration is rolling out quite a number of programmes, such as conditionally
cash transfer, under which the beneficiaries will receive N25,000 for three months.
She said there are also grants or zero-interest loans to support the vulnerable to have means of livelihood, as well as End-Hunger, among others, saying that all of these programmes are tailored towards lifting 50 million Nigerians out of poverty within the next 42 months as directed by President Tinubu.
The minister had earlier visited adire markets at Itoku and Asero, Abeokuta saying that the federal and state governments will further support those producing the local fabrics to make more money from the business while also creating jobs for others.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Community Development Association, Isheri, Mr Gbenga Osobu, disclosed that what the community actually wanted was a permanent solution to the devastating flood and not any food palliatives.
Osobu said that the community was however having a ray of hope that President Bola Tinubu will do all that is within his power to put the painful experience behind the residents and give them reason to be happy again.
He said, “We are truly appreciative of your concern and the humanitarian you have brought here to provide succour for us but what we want is not palliatives but a permanent solution to this reoccurring flood challenge.
“We are even happy that the federal government has sent two Ministers here to assess the situation. The governor has equally been here, this is quite different from how things used to be in the past because it used to take government officials months to come and see what the problem is. It is on this note that we believe that President Bola Tinubu will rise up to the occasion and save us from this trouble”.
