In a significant leap toward educational modernisation, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has witnessed a remarkable response, with a total of 8,285 candidates registering for its maiden Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE), despite initial resistance, according to Dr. Amos Josiah, the Head of National Office at WAEC, Nigeria.
Scheduled to run from January 31 to February 17, 2024, this maiden CB-WASSCE is set to introduce a hybrid mode of examination, where Objective or Multiple Choice questions will be presented on-screen, with candidates providing responses electronically. The Essay and Practical questions will also be on-screen, but candidates will use answer booklets for written responses.
In a press briefing held on Monday at WAEC head office, Yaba, Dr. Josiah highlighted WAEC Nigeria’s commitment to innovation, offering candidates an alternative to traditional Pen and Paper exams. The acceptance of this groundbreaking approach has been demonstrated by the significant number of entries, with 3,949 male candidates (47.66%) and 4,336 female candidates (52.3%) registering for examination across 19 subjects and 26 papers.
In preparation for a seamless examination experience and to deter malpractices, WAEC has trained carefully selected examination officials as Proctors. The release of results is expected 45 days after the last paper, with certificates accessible via certrequest.waec.org.ng, and digital copies available on the WAEC Digital Certificate portal at www.waec.org.
Dr. Josiah expressed gratitude for the positive reception of this innovative approach, emphasizing WAEC’s dedication to delivering a credible examination. As the countdown to the CB-WASSCE begins, candidates are encouraged to visit the WAEC portal for materials and additional information on the examination. The educational landscape is evolving, and WAEC remains at the forefront, embracing change and enhancing the assessment experience for candidates nationwide.
