Chairman of the House Committee on Food and Drug Administration and Control, Rep. Regina Akume, has highlighted the multifaceted challenges facing Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
She observed that farmers are being forced to abandon their lands due to escalating insecurity, while stressing the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to address the root causes of instability.
Akume spoke with Gatmash News in an exclusive interview in Lagos on Thursday, 15th February, 2024.
Speaking on the nexus, she underscored the crucial role of legislative intervention in fortifying staple foods with essential micronutrients.
She stressed that the development of a robust legislative framework and policy on nutritional fortification would provide the necessary advocacy and legal backing to ensure institutionalized and systemic compliance within the food industry.
This, she argued, is pivotal in addressing the broader issues of food fortification, workforce nutrition, and sustainable food systems in Nigeria.
Rep. Regina Akume’s remarks came against the backdrop of a two-day retreat focused on Food Fortification, Workforce Nutrition, and Food Systems Transformation at a transformative two-day retreat held at the Marriot Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.
The retreat was organized by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) under the leadership of Executive Director Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani) in collaboration with distinguished members of the National Assembly, stakeholders, and experts.
The event marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s collective efforts to combat food insecurity and malnutrition, with stakeholders united in their resolve to drive tangible progress and sustainable change.
