The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced its readiness to conduct the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2024, in Nigeria.
This was disclosed by the Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, at a press briefing held on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the Nigeria National Office, Yaba, Lagos.
According to Dr. Josiah, the examination will take place between Tuesday, April 30, and Monday, June 24, 2024, spanning seven weeks and six days.
The examination will be conducted in four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
A total of 1,814,344 candidates from 22,229 schools have registered for the examination, with 902,328 males and 912,016 females, representing 49.73% and 50.27%, respectively, marking a significant increase compared to previous years.
Candidates would be examined in 76 subjects, made up of 197 papers. About 30,000 practicing senior secondary school teachers, nominated by various ministries of education, will supervise the examination.
Dr. Josiah noted that WAEC has implemented the National Identification Number (NIN) as a registration component in line with the directive of the Federal Government, enhancing the integrity of the registration process.
Highlighting WAEC’s status as the foremost examination body in Africa, Dr. Josiah emphasized the organisation’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as a global brand.
He acknowledged WAEC’s recent achievement in conducting the WASSCE for private candidates using a computer-based model, showcasing the Council’s dedication to leveraging information and communication technology (ICT) to enhance service delivery.
Addressing concerns about insecurity across the country, Dr. Josiah acknowledged the challenges of conducting examinations in insecurity-prone areas. He assured stakeholders that WAEC is collaborating with the Inspector General of Police and state governments to provide adequate security measures, ensuring the examination is conducted in a safe and secure environment.
Dr. Josiah reiterated WAEC’s zero-tolerance policy towards examination malpractice.
Emphasizing that the Council will decisively deal with candidates and examination functionaries who engage in any form of malpractice.
He also cautioned parents and guardians against patronising rogue websites and encouraged candidates to study diligently and desist from examination malpractice.
Stressing the importance of adhering to examination guidelines to maintain the integrity of the examination process.
The Council has introduced a compilation of past questions with marking schemes to aid candidates’ learning and has made available its e-learning portal to provide learning materials and expert advice. The WAEC Konnect portal has also been developed to enable candidates and other stakeholders to interact with the Council and access necessary information. Visit https://WAEConline.org.ng.
Dr. Josiah assured stakeholders that results would be released within 45 days after the last paper, while certificates would be printed and issued to schools in less than 90 days after the release of results. Digital copies of candidates’ certificates will also be accessible on the Digital Certificate platform.
The Council has made significant strides in improving its service delivery, including the launch of the Educational Statistics (EDUSTAT) platform, the Digital Certificate Platform, Computer-Based Testing Services, Aptitude Tests Department, WAEC Request Management Portal/Chatbot, and WAEC Verify.
Dr. Josiah expressed gratitude to the Honourable Minister of Education, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, all State Ministries of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and other stakeholders for their support and cooperation.
He also charged the media to collaborate with the Council in disseminating information and maintaining transparency throughout the examination period.
