The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, on Friday, said no fewer than 55 private and commercial drivers were sanctioned for operating illegal garages and impeding traffic along the Obalende and Iyana-Oworonsoki areas of the state.
LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement obtained by PUNCH Online, stressed that the sanction came after repeated warnings had been issued to the drivers.
He added that there were growing concerns about the activities of the motorists which he described as causing unnecessary hardship for innocent motorists.
Taofiq added, “This operation was led by LASTMA Director of Operations, Peter Gbegemede, following the directives of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa.
“Giwa confirmed that the drivers of these commercial vehicles, including private car owners, had been repeatedly warned by the government before the enforcement operations commenced.
“The Special Adviser expressed his concern over the unsightly and disruptive activities of commercial bus operators, which cause significant traffic issues for innocent motorists.”
Taofiq noted that the operations would continue before and after the Eid-el Kabir celebration across the state while stressing that LASTMA would ensure that there are no impediments on roads across the state during the celebration.
“The enforcement operations will be ongoing, with zero tolerance for illegal garages and indiscriminate parking. We will also remove any impediments on our roads in Lagos,” the statement concluded.
