Nigerian social media activist and content creator, Scott Iguma, has raised concerns over the hygiene and quality of some drinking-water products, calling on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to investigate.
Iguma made the allegations in videos shared on social media, where he questioned the condition of CWAY Nigeria Drinking Water Sci. & Tech. Co. Ltd refill bottles and dispenser jars.
In one of the videos, he was seen destroying CWAY refill bottles, alleging that some of the containers were extremely dirty and improperly stored. He also claimed that consuming the water caused him stomach pains.
Iguma also shared another video involving Nirvana Table Water, a product of The La Casera Company Plc, in which he displayed what he described as black dirt or particles inside a bottle.
The claims have attracted public attention, particularly because packaged and refill drinking water are widely consumed across Nigeria.
The allegations, however, have not been independently verified.
CWAY Issues Response
CWAY has responded to the controversy with a public notice reaffirming its commitment to producing safe, high-quality drinking water in compliance with established Nigerian Industrial Standards.
The company explained that bottles may develop external marks or scratches during storage, transportation or handling outside their intended conditions.
It stated that defective bottles are retrieved, destroyed and replaced, adding that its refill-water bottles are thoroughly cleaned with high-technology machines before filling.
CWAY maintained that its refill-water bottles continue to meet the quality expected by consumers.
The company did not indicate in the notice that its products had failed any regulatory quality assessment, however, the concerns raised by the activist remain claims that require independent verification.
Why Regulatory Verification Matters
NAFDAC can provide clarity through product sampling, laboratory testing and, where necessary, inspection of facilities and processes connected to the production, storage, transportation and distribution of the affected products.
Such an assessment would determine whether the products meet applicable safety requirements and whether any corrective action is necessary.
It would equally give the affected manufacturers an opportunity to have the allegations objectively examined rather than allowing public opinion on social media to determine the matter.
Consumers also have a responsibility to report suspected unsafe products through recognised regulatory channels and preserve relevant evidence for investigation. Water is one of the most basic things human beings consume. It is not a luxury product whose safety can be left to competing claims online.
