Twenty-nine years ago today, the world lost one of the most recognisable and admired members of the British royal family.
On 31 August 1997, Princess Diana died at the age of 36 following a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris. She was travelling with Dodi Fayed when the Mercedes carrying them crashed while being pursued by photographers. Despite emergency efforts, Diana died from her injuries in the early hours of the morning.
Her death sent shockwaves across the world, with millions mourning a woman whose influence extended far beyond the walls of the British monarchy.
Diana was admired for her elegance and global fame, but it was her compassion that made her stand apart. She used her position to draw attention to issues affecting vulnerable people, including homelessness, HIV/AIDS, children and landmines.
She was also known for breaking from the traditional distance often associated with royalty. Her willingness to shake hands, embrace people and engage directly with those facing difficult circumstances helped reshape how the public viewed members of the Royal Family.
Almost three decades later, her humanitarian work remains an important part of her legacy.
For millions around the world, Princess Diana remains “The People’s Princess”; a woman remembered not only for how she lived in the public eye, but for the humanity she showed to people who needed to be seen.
