Confirmed AI-generated political images and videos are receiving substantially higher levels of views and likes than AI-assisted content on social media, according to the latest #TrackingNaija2027Elections monitoring by CEREDEMS-Africa.
The finding follows earlier tracking which identified social media influencers and supporters of political parties and candidates as major creators of synthetic political content.
Analysis of social media activity monitored in 2026 recorded the following engagement patterns:

The data shows a clear difference between passive and active engagement: users viewed and liked confirmed synthetic material at much higher rates, while the difference was smaller among commenters.
CEREDEMS-Africa analysts say the pattern warrants attention as political communication intensifies towards 2027, particularly where synthetic content is used to reinforce ethnic, religious or political divisions.
The organisation is calling for clear labelling of synthetic material, greater platform accountability and stronger media literacy to help citizens identify AI-generated content and assess political information before engaging with or sharing it.
It also urges social media platforms to review the amplification of synthetic political material while protecting legitimate political expression.
