The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Mr. Suleiman Danlami Kum as the new Head of the Nigeria National Office, succeeding Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, who has assumed office as the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Council.
Kum brings more than two decades of experience within WAEC to the position, having served across examination security, test administration, security printing, branch and zonal management, administration and other critical areas of the Council’s operations.
Born on October 16, 1970, in Minna, Niger State, Kum hails from Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
He attended Baptist High School, Jos, where he obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE) in 1986/1987.
He proceeded to the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, where he earned a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in 1992.
His commitment to further education continued with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in 2025. He is currently completing a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Educational Administration and Planning at the same institution.
Kum began his professional career in 1993 during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme at the Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he served as Head of the Animal Production Unit.
He later returned to Baptist High School, Jos, where he worked between 1995 and 1998 as a Form Master, Labour Master, Classroom Teacher and Health Master.
His contribution to the school was recognised in 1998 when he received the Light and Life Staff Merit Award.
Kum joined WAEC on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II, beginning a career that would take him through a succession of increasingly senior positions.
His early assignments included responsibility for examination security at WAEC’s Awka, Yola and Makurdi offices.
He later served as Branch Controller in Gusau and Kano, before moving into senior national-level responsibilities.
From August 2016 to February 2021, he served as Deputy Registrar and Head of the Security Printing Department. He subsequently became Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt, followed by a stint at the Ikeja Zonal Office.
In January 2024, Kum became Director of Administration, a position he held until August 2025.
He subsequently served as Senior Deputy Registrar/Test Administration from September 2025 to August 2026, before moving to the Head of National Office’s Office as Deputy Registrar.
He rose to the rank of Senior Deputy Registrar in 2024.
Beyond his administrative responsibilities, Kum has been involved in several initiatives aimed at strengthening WAEC’s examination and operational systems.
Among the innovations attributed to his career are the establishment of the Gusau office as a Custodial Centre, the introduction of Variable Data Prints (VDP) and enhanced code-security features in security printing, and the deployment of facial-recognition biometric devices to replace Council-wide attendance systems.
He also played a role in the delivery of Achievement Tests through Computer-Based Examination (CBE).
His professional expertise covers test development, test administration, examination security, security printing, and branch and zonal office management.
Kum has participated in national and international trainings, conferences and symposia, including programmes in the United Kingdom.
He has also contributed publications to national and international volumes and presented academic and professional papers in his areas of expertise.
He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM).
Kum assumes leadership of the WAEC Nigeria National Office at a significant point in his career, following years of responsibility across different operational and administrative units of the Council.
His appointment also marks another stage in a professional journey that began in agricultural education, moved through classroom teaching and examination administration, and progressed into senior leadership within WAEC.
With his experience spanning examination security, technology-driven innovations, test administration, administration and field operations, Kum is now set to lead the Council’s Nigeria National Office.
He is married with children. His interests include travelling, swimming, reading and watching movies.
