As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Department of State Services (DSS) has emerged as a prominent agency in electoral security discourse, with early-warning alerts accounting for the largest share of identified themes in a media-tracking exercise.
The findings are part of the #TrackingNaija2027Elections initiative, which examines electoral integrity and emerging risks ahead of the polls.
According to the data provided, the analysis covers Nigerian newspaper reports from 2024 to 2026, as well as broadcast and social media content from 2026, with a sample size of 228 observations (n=228).
Early-warning alerts ranked highest, accounting for 21.92% of the identified themes, followed by emerging conflicts at 15.35%.
Information sharing accounted for 14.91%, while preventive intervention represented 14.47%, highlighting the prominence of intelligence coordination and preventive security measures in the coverage analysed.
Other identified themes included political threats (10.08%), threat identification (5.26%), intelligence gathering (5.26%), community intelligence (3.50%), extremist and criminal threats (3.50%), response time (3.07%) and intelligence gaps (2.63%).
Strengthening Electoral Security Through Collaboration
The findings underscore the importance of early-warning systems, timely intelligence sharing and preventive action in addressing potential threats to Nigeria’s electoral process.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, stronger coordination among the DSS, other security agencies, electoral stakeholders and relevant community networks will be essential to identifying emerging risks and supporting a peaceful electoral environment.
The analysis also points to the importance of addressing intelligence gaps and strengthening response mechanisms to ensure that potential threats are assessed and acted upon promptly.
However, the percentages reflect the themes identified in the media-tracking sample and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the DSS’s operational performance or the actual incidence of electoral threats.
