The Lagos State Safety Commission, on Wednesday, said it had sealed off Monaplax Company Limited, Ojota over safety infractions at the factory resulting in the mangling of the hands of an employee, Matthew Eworo, in a mixer machine.
Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened when Eworo was on a night shift at the factory on August 31.
The Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mrs Adewunmi Okoh, who confirmed the incident in a text message sent to The PUNCH, said the sealing of the company followed an unreported accident at the factory.
“The particular incident that caused the seal action was due to an unreported accident involving a recently employed 29-year-old, identified as Mathew Eworo, whose arms got mangled in a mixer while on night duty,” Okoh said.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that there was zero employee training, very poor housekeeping, no health and safety policy or safety management system, unavailability of personal protective equipment for workers, and poor welfare for staff.
“Furthermore, there was poor emergency response following the accident,” Okoh stated, adding that “further investigation is still ongoing.”
