The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has dismissed as fake a letter currently circulating online claiming that security personnel would be deployed to all examination centres for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement released by the examination body, WAEC said its attention had been drawn to the fraudulent document dated May 27, 2026, bearing the reference number L/SED/12/DIST/VOL. 4/460 and allegedly addressed to “The Proprietor/Principal of Schools.”
According to the Council, the forged letter falsely claimed that WAEC had finalized plans for a “comprehensive deployment” of officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to all examination centres nationwide beginning June 1, 2026.
WAEC further revealed that the document carried a forged signature purportedly belonging to the Senior Deputy Registrar/Head of Test Administration, Mr. S.D. Kum.
The examination body categorically denied issuing any such directive, stressing that the letter did not originate from the office of the Senior Deputy Registrar (Test Administration) or any department within WAEC Nigeria.
“The Management of the West African Examinations Council wishes to state categorically that the said letter is fake,” the statement read.
WAEC also noted that it had not announced or approved any arrangement regarding the deployment of security personnel to individual examination centres as described in the fake document.
The Council described the incident as the handiwork of “mischief-makers and fraudsters” allegedly seeking to create panic, disrupt the smooth conduct of the ongoing examination process, and mislead school proprietors, principals, parents, and candidates.
Consequently, WAEC urged school authorities, supervisors, invigilators, parents, candidates, and members of the public to disregard the contents of the circulating letter entirely.
The Council also used the opportunity to wish all registered candidates for the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates success in their preparations and examinations.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by examination authorities to maintain credibility, order, and public confidence in Nigeria’s examination system while combating misinformation and examination malpractice.
