An easyJet flight travelling from Hurghada to Luton was forced to make an emergency landing in Rome after a passenger reportedly left a phone charging with a power bank inside checked luggage.
The incident caused panic among the 180 passengers onboard after the captain announced: “There’s something we shouldn’t have in the hold,” as the aircraft unexpectedly began descending.
According to reports, the plane landed safely in Rome around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday after concerns emerged over the fire risks associated with lithium batteries and power banks stored in cargo holds.
Passengers later learned that a woman had informed a flight attendant about the power bank after the flight was already underway, prompting the diversion as a safety precaution.
One passenger, Paul Casterton, who was travelling with his partner Laura Bartlett, said many onboard were left confused and anxious because little information was initially provided during the emergency situation.
Following the landing, passengers were either accommodated in hotels or spent the night at the terminal while awaiting another flight to Luton the following day.
Airlines worldwide maintain strict regulations on power banks and lithium battery devices due to the potential fire hazards they pose during flights.
