For several weeks, our tracking has been revealing what stakeholders need to do to deliver peaceful and credible elections in 2027. In line with our approach, the second Evidence to Action and Learning Series puts critical questions before potential voters to help them assess candidates.
The questions are drawn from our recent tracking, which reveals patterns in the public’s information-seeking behaviour around policy and campaign issues being discussed by stakeholders.
As electoral stakeholders and non-state actors work towards improving the electoral system and processes, our analysts stress the need for the electorate to look beyond candidates’ claims. Voters need to subject such claims to adequate scrutiny before making informed decisions.
ASSESSING YOUR CANDIDATE – 9 Questions Every Voter Should Ask:
1. Who is the candidate? – Know his/her background, values, and track record.
2. What experience does he/she bring to the position? – What has he/she done before that qualifies him/her for this office?
3. What does he/she say he/she wants to change? – Is the diagnosis of Nigeria’s problems clear and evidence-based?
4. What does he/she promise Nigerians? – Are promises specific or vague?
5. What does his/her manifesto say about jobs, security, food, education, healthcare and the economy? – Does it address your priority issues?
6. How will he/she do it? – Does he/she explain the method, funding, and execution plan?
7. Does he/she identify the institutions responsible? Does he/she provide timelines and targets? – Good plans name who will do what, when, and how success will be measured.
8. What does it mean for you? – Translate the national promise to personal impact.
9. How could the proposed policies affect your family, community, work, education, security and standard of living? – Assess the real-life consequences.
“Peaceful and credible elections start with informed choices. When voters ask hard questions, candidates are forced to offer real solutions, not just slogans,” CEREDEMS analysts said.
The Evidence to Action and Learning Series is part of CEREDEMS-Africa’s #TrackingNaija2027Elections project, which tracks campaign activities and electoral risks since August 2026.
