Most AI-generated content spreading across social media platforms ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections falls within the low-harm category, although a significant share is classified as high harm, according to the latest #TrackingNaija2027Elections analysis by CEREDEMS-Africa.
The tracking examined 194 AI-related contents that spread across platforms. Low-harm content accounted for 62.37%, followed by high-harm content at 22.16% and moderate-harm content at 15.46%.
CEREDEMS linked the relatively lower overall harm to the limited presence of darkfake and foefake content in its earlier tracking. Much of the monitored material was classified as glowfake and fanfake, involving promotional or satirical content rather than material intended to deceive voters, suppress participation or incite violence.
The organisation, however, warned that continued cross-platform circulation requires monitoring and called on platforms, INEC, political parties and civil society organisations to strengthen AI-content labelling, digital literacy and early detection of potentially harmful synthetic content.
