The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a viral report claiming it has revised subject combinations for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), including a purported restriction preventing Science and Arts students from offering Economics.
In a statement reported on Sunday, October 19, the examination body described the claim as false and misleading, urging students, parents, schools and other stakeholders to disregard the publication.
“Our attention has been drawn to misleading reports claiming the Council has imposed subject restrictions on certain students or altered the national curriculum. This is FALSE,” the Council said.
WAEC clarified that it does not independently determine or alter Nigeria’s national curriculum, noting that curriculum design falls under the responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Education and relevant education authorities.
The clarification follows the circulation of an online article titled “WAEC Revises 2026 Subject Combinations – Economics Restricted for Science and Arts Students,” which claimed that Economics would be reserved exclusively for students in the Business or Commercial category.
However, WAEC has denied issuing such a directive urges the public to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information about examination registration, subject selection and other requirements.
Students and school administrators are therefore advised to confirm subject-selection requirements through official WAEC guidance and relevant education authorities rather than relying on unverified social media posts or blog reports.
