The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted recent media reports suggesting that it directed schools to restrict Senior Secondary students to specific subjects ahead of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement issued to GATMASH NEWS by the Council’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, anipr, WAEC described the reports as unfounded and misleading, stressing that the Council did not issue any directive limiting students’ choice of subjects for the upcoming examination.
“WAEC wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption. The Council did not issue any such directive nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subject(s) for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as alleged,” the statement clarified.
WAEC further explained that the development and regulation of school curricula in Nigeria fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, not the Council. As an examination body, WAEC only implements government-approved curricula through its assessment processes.
“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government,” the statement continued. “WAEC, as a law-abiding organization, operates strictly within established legal and operational frameworks and does not unilaterally implement curriculum changes.”
The Council urged schools, stakeholders, parents, and the general public to disregard the misleading reports and to rely only on official communications from WAEC for accurate information regarding the 2026 WASSCE.
WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, professionalism, and excellence in the conduct of examinations, assuring that no candidate will be disenfranchised in the forthcoming WASSCE for School Candidates.
“WAEC remains dedicated to professionalism and excellence in the service of the Nigerian Child,” the Council emphasized. “All candidates participating in the WASSCE 2026 will be given equal opportunity for fair assessment.”
