The All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election held in Ebonyi State on May 16, 2026, has triggered widespread reactions and criticism after a chaotic and seemingly irregular vote-counting sequence surfaced online, leaving many Nigerians questioning the credibility of the process.
In viral video clips circulating on social media, delegates and observers were seen calling out vote counts in an unusual and inconsistent pattern, ranging from “7, 8, 9, 10…100…101, 102, 200…207, 208, 300…1500,” a sequence that quickly sparked confusion and public disbelief.
Another segment of the footage captured what appeared to be an erratic tally progression, with numbers jumping inconsistently: “9, 10, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 200, 201, 201, 202, 203, 204, 206, 207, 208, 300, 301, 302, 304, 305, 306, 307.”
The process appeared to further devolve into irregular counting patterns, with additional figures called out as “400, 410, 411, 470, 600, 702, 704, 705, 900, 901,” before culminating in final tallies such as “902, 903, 904, 1000, 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005, 150, 151, 152, 1500.”
The disjointed sequence has since fueled public debate, with many describing the exercise as “flabbergasting,” “confusing,” and lacking transparency, raising concerns over electoral integrity during party primaries.
Observers at the venue were heard making intermittent announcements as proceedings continued, including brief interruptions such as “We’ll be right back,” further adding to the perception of disorder during the exercise.
At one point, unrelated background remarks also surfaced in the recording, deepening public curiosity about what transpired during the exercise.
As of press time, the APC leadership in Ebonyi State is yet to issue an official statement addressing the controversy or clarifying the vote-counting procedure used during the primaries.
