Youth are largely missing from voter education and peacebuilding processes ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, a new tracking report by CEREDEMS-AFRICA has shown.
The tracking, which analysed 52 observations from Nigerian newspapers between 2024 and 2026, as well as broadcast and social media content from 2026, found that 86.53 per cent of documented barriers to youth participation relate to voter education, while 13.46 per cent relate to peacebuilding.
The data indicates that young people are not adequately involved in the planning and implementation of voter education and peacebuilding programmes. It also shows a limited number of youth-led civil society and non-governmental organisations working in these areas.
The report calls for deliberate efforts by both youth-led and non-youth-led organisations to expand civic education, involve young people in electoral initiatives, and equip them with the knowledge needed to contribute to credible and peaceful elections in 2027.
The findings are part of TrackingNaija2027Elections, a collaborative initiative by CEREDEMS-AFRICA, the University of Ilorin, and the RUDN University Institute of Geopolitical Communications.
