The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have agreed on a one-time verification system for candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Under the new arrangement, candidates whose admissions are regulated by JAMB will verify their WAEC West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or O’Level results once through JAMB, after which the verification outcome will be made available to the institution where the candidate seeks admission.
The two examination and admission bodies announced the resolution in a joint statement issued to clarify the recently introduced WASSCE/O’Level result verification policy.
They said the arrangement was reached following a series of meetings and consultations aimed at simplifying the verification process and reducing the financial and logistical burden on admission seekers.
JAMB and WAEC stated that tertiary institutions must utilise the verified results provided by JAMB for screening, admission processing and other related administrative purposes.
Consequently, candidates are not expected to pay a second verification fee to their institutions.
The approved verification fee is ₦4,000, payable once by candidates through the designated JAMB-provisioned verification platform. The fee is not to be paid through the candidate’s preferred institution.
WAEC has also authorised JAMB to share the outcome of the verification exercise with relevant tertiary institutions for admission screening and other approved purposes.
The bodies stressed that candidates who successfully verify their WASSCE O’Level results through the verification service will not be required to repeat the process for the same admission exercise.
According to WAEC and JAMB, the new arrangement will reduce the need for candidates to make repeated visits to tertiary institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres, as the verification process can be initiated from home or any location with internet access.
The agencies urged candidates to take advantage of the system by completing their verification once and retaining the benefit of the verified result for subsequent admission processes.
The collaboration, they said, is aimed at putting candidates’ interests first by reducing unnecessary costs, simplifying admission procedures and ensuring the integrity and security of academic records.
The clarification is also expected to address concerns among admission seekers over repeated requests for O’Level result verification and associated charges during the admission process.
