Fabricated political statements and manipulated visual content are emerging as major forms of information disorder ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, according to tracking under the #TrackingNaija2027Elections project.
Completely fabricated political statements account for nearly 43% of fact-checked claims, involving fake quotations, manufactured endorsements and false campaign promises attributed to political actors.
Manipulated visual media follows at nearly 29%, including digitally altered images and recycled footage presented as new developments.
The tracking also identifies the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) among the major targets of misinformation, alongside prominent political figures including Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar. The content targets both political actors and confidence in the electoral process.
The findings underline the need for voters to verify political claims, examine the authenticity of images and videos, and rely on credible sources before sharing election-related information.
#TrackingNaija2027Elections is a collaborative project by CEREDEMS-AFRICA, University of Ilorin and RUDN University Institute of Geopolitical Communications, tracking electoral integrity and risks ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
