Google’s upcoming Gemini Intelligence feature is shaping up to be one of the most advanced AI experiences ever introduced on Android devices — but surprisingly, many of today’s flagship smartphones will not support it.
According to requirements quietly published in a footnote on Android’s official platform documentation, Gemini Intelligence demands significantly higher hardware and software specifications than most current Android phones can provide.
Among the requirements are:
A flagship-level chipset
At least 12GB of RAM
Support for AI Core
Gemini Nano v3 or newer
Long-term software support, including five Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates
The biggest limitation appears to be the Gemini Nano v3 requirement. Reports indicate that devices such as the Google Pixel 9, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Xiaomi 17 series currently run Gemini Nano v2, automatically excluding them from Gemini Intelligence compatibility despite having flagship-level hardware.
This means even some of the newest premium Android phones on the market may not be capable of running Google’s most ambitious AI system.
Google is reportedly preparing to introduce Gemini Intelligence officially on newer-generation devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 expected later this year. The upcoming Google Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 series are also expected to support the feature, alongside OPPO’s Find X9 lineup.
Another issue raising concern among Android users is Google’s 12GB RAM minimum. Early leaks suggest the base Pixel 11 model could launch with only 8GB RAM, potentially preventing Google’s own future flagship from accessing one of its headline AI features.
Industry observers say the move highlights how quickly AI demands are reshaping smartphone hardware standards. Unlike traditional voice assistants, Gemini Intelligence is designed to carry out complex multi-step tasks autonomously in the background — including gathering information, processing requests, interacting with apps, and completing actions on behalf of users with minimal supervision.
The feature is expected to become a major selling point for next-generation Android devices as Google continues expanding its AI ecosystem across smartphones, search, productivity, and personal assistance tools.
However, the strict requirements may also create frustration among consumers who purchased premium devices expecting long-term access to Google’s latest AI innovations.
