The inclusion of former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, as Director of Women Mobilisation in President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council has renewed debate over political accountability and the standard expected of public figures facing unresolved investigations.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended Edu’s inclusion, saying she has not been convicted of any offence and should not be prevented from participating in political activities while an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation remains unresolved.
The party’s campaign spokesperson, Kemi Asekun-Shittu, made the position known on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.
Edu was suspended by President Tinubu in January 2024 following allegations concerning the transfer of ₦585 million in public funds to a private account. The President subsequently directed the EFCC to investigate the matter. Edu denied wrongdoing, and no conviction has been recorded against her.
Defending her return to a prominent political role, Asekun-Shittu said it would be unfair to expect Edu to suspend her political activities until the EFCC concludes its investigation.
She also described the campaign council as an internal party structure, arguing that the APC has the discretion to select individuals it considers capable of contributing to its campaign.
The controversy surrounding Edu’s appointment has therefore renewed calls for clarity on the status of the EFCC investigation. If the investigation has been concluded, Nigerians deserve to know the outcome. If it remains ongoing, the reasons for the delay also merit public explanation.
The prolonged uncertainty is problematic from both sides. An unresolved investigation can leave the public with unanswered questions while also leaving the person under investigation with allegations hanging over her reputation.
For a country seeking to strengthen public confidence in its institutions, cases involving allegations of financial misconduct should be resolved transparently and without undue delay.
