Facebook and X recorded the highest shares of AI-related content classified across harm levels in the latest #TrackingNaija2027Elections analysis by CEREDEMS-Africa.
The assessment covered 247 AI-related contents drawn from Nigerian newspapers (2024–2026), broadcast media (2024–2026) and social media (2026), comprising 50 high-harm, 44 moderate-harm and 153 low-harm cases.
Facebook accounted for 90% of high-harm content, 93.18% of moderate-harm content and 90.84% of low-harm content. X recorded 6%, 4.54% and 3.26% respectively. Instagram accounted for 4% of high-harm content and 3.26% of low-harm content, while TikTok recorded 2.27% of moderate-harm and 2.61% of low-harm content.
CEREDEMS said the monitored sample did not indicate a high level of harm to voters, noting that glowfakes and fanfakes; content that praises, promotes or humorously portrays candidates: were more prevalent than malicious forms such as darkfakes.
The organisation nevertheless urged social media platforms to strengthen AI-content labelling, work with Nigerian fact-checkers and take measures against deceptive political deepfakes as campaign activities intensify ahead of 2027.
