The Coalition of Renewed Hope has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration against recent criticisms over insecurity, the economy, labour relations and other national issues, accusing opposition groups of exploiting the country’s challenges for political advantage.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade James Okoronkwo, and National Secretary, Comrade Jamilu Maikano, the coalition addressed the abduction of prospective NYSC members in Imo State, the economy, comments by former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, labour relations, Peter Obi’s comments on insecurity and criticisms by former presidential aide Femi Ojudu.
On the abducted NYSC members, the coalition expressed sympathy with the victims and their families and commended security agencies for efforts to rescue those still in captivity.
It urged Nigerians to allow security agencies to conduct rescue operations without pressure that could compromise their efforts.
The group, however, criticised calls for President Tinubu’s resignation over the incident, describing such demands as politically motivated. It argued that insecurity predates the present administration and said the Federal Government was addressing it through intelligence gathering, technology, funding, training, equipment and inter-agency cooperation.
On the economy, the coalition defended the administration’s decision to remove fuel subsidy and reform the foreign exchange market, saying Tinubu inherited severe fiscal and monetary challenges in 2023.
It acknowledged the economic difficulties facing Nigerians but maintained that the reforms were intended to restore economic stability, improve revenue and attract investment.
The coalition also rejected criticisms surrounding Amaechi’s comments about his late mother and healthcare costs. It said personal tragedies should not be turned into political weapons and called for more responsible public discourse on healthcare and the welfare of elderly citizens.
On organised labour, the coalition dismissed the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero’s criticism of the administration as unfair.
It cited the new minimum wage, CNG initiatives, youth empowerment programmes, NELFUND interventions and other government measures as evidence of policies targeted at workers, students and young Nigerians.
The group urged labour leaders to maintain their independence while pursuing dialogue with government on workers’ concerns.
Reacting to Peter Obi’s reported promise to spend holidays in Zamfara and Borno if elected president in 2027, the coalition described the proposal as symbolic and argued that insecurity required concrete security and economic policies rather than gestures.
The coalition also criticised former presidential aide Femi Ojudu, questioning his recent criticisms of the Tinubu administration and contrasting them with his previous participation in Nigerian politics.
It accused Ojudu of political inconsistency and urged him to use his experience to offer constructive counsel rather than public attacks.
The coalition concluded by expressing confidence in the Tinubu administration and urging Nigerians, opposition parties, labour organisations and civil society groups to prioritise national interest.
It maintained that while criticism remains essential to democracy, public criticism should, in its view, be factual, responsible and focused on solutions.
